Unread mail messages on login screen?

W

Walt Basil

Windows XP SP2
Office 2003 Student Teacher Edition with latest SP applied

On the User Login screen, where it shows the users, and you click on one to
log in, it shows how many applications are running (if already opened, but
switched to another user) and how many unread messages there are.

I know it pulls this information off Hotmail. How does it do this, and can I
change it to not tell me how many unread messages I have?

Here is my problem with it. For my account, I really don't care. My wife, on
the other hand, doesn't like it, and it is not correct. She does not even
have a MSN Passport account set up on her side, no Messenger use or set up.
Yet it tells her that she has one unread message. It's not pulling it from
Outlook that I can tell, because Outlook tells her that there are no unread
messages.

It all started, I believe, when one of her friends used the comptuer to
check her Hotmail. Her friend didn't save the information in the web browser
(FireFox). But ever since, it has told my Wife that she has one unread
message.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Hi

Download TweakUI from
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp and when
installed go to Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI - then go to
Logon>Unread Mail - disable it in the right hand pane.

Otherwise the Unread Mail can be disabled via the Registry - navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail\[Youremailaddress],
double click on 'MessageCount' - in the right hand pane - and change the
value to 0(Zero).

***If you do opt for the Registry please 'tweak', please backup the Registry
first. A good program to do this - as well as being able to restore the
Registry - is ERunt:

Thanks very much! Editing the registry did the trick.
