Unread mail message

My log in screen states I have an unread mail message yet
I do not. Where in regedit can I change the setting to
correct this? Thanks for your help

Download and install tweakui for xp and use its repair mail count feature or
use it to turn the mail count off completely.

Or edit the registry and delete the mail accounts you don't want:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail
