unread mail in Inbox only search

I am using Outlook 2007. I see the Unread Mail folder, but there are over
53,000 messages since it is pulling unread mail from ALL my folders, not just
the Inbox. I don't necessarily read email before dragging it to a folder
since many are newsletters that I'll eventually look at.

I want to ONLY see unread INBOX messages. How do I do this? I tried
creating a rule but can't figure it out. It doesn't seem to me like it's
possible to do a rule for this. Anyone know how?

Right click the Search Folder and choose Customize this Search Folder. In
this dialog press Browse to select which folders the Search Folder should
search in. Note the checkmark that can be set to also search the subfolders
of the selected folders.

Your suggestion worked part way. I did what you suggested, but instead of
only giving me new messages, it gave me all messages in the inbox, read and
unread.

I cannot help Pam, but I'm hoping someone can help me. All my mail is going
to my "unread mail" and then disappears after I look at it. Can anyone help
in very simplified language? Thank you

Sounds like you've changed the criteria. In the Customize dialog you can
press Criteria... Make sure you've got the options set to only display
Unread items.

Nothing wrong here; works as it should. The Unread Mail folder only shows
unread items. They will disappear from that folder when they get marked as
read.

Note that the Unread Mail folder is a Search Folder and not an actual
location. The mails are still in their original folder in which you've
received them (most likely in the folder Inbox).

Thanks for your quick reply. Unfortunately, I didn't explain my problem
very well. My inbox is not receiving my mail -- it only goes to my unread
mail. I need an inbox so I can read something and leave it there for awhile.
My cable was down for a day and when it was reconnected I started to
experience this problem. Until that time, my Inbox was working fine. Do you
have any additional suggestions? Thanks very much for your time.

As I said; the Unread Mail folder isn't a folder that can store items; it
displays the results of a search query.

Use View-> Arrange By-> Folder to see in which physical folder the item
resides.
If you do not see the items in that folder make sure you do not have a
filter applied to that folder or reset the view;
View-> Arrange By-> Custom...-> Reset Current View
