For the mail count problem:
Download and install tweakui for xp and use its repair mail count feature or
use it to turn the mail count off completely.

Or edit the registry and delete the mail accounts you don't want:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail
Then right click on UnreadMail and click permissions and in every account set the permissions to deny. Turn off the autocomplete to stop the URL lists and the run commands list can be stopped as well by going to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU and set permissions in every case to deny. Turn off balloon tips by going start\search\change preferences. Then HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Wubdiws\CurrentVersion\Explorer and then click Explorer to open the subkeys in the right panel and then in the right panel right click and then create new DWord EnableBalloonTips and then click in a blank area to set the name and then right click on it then modify then set to 0 This will disable them. If you want to reenable set to 1 . There are still popup descriptions for files to stop yet. whew XP loves to waste time telling you what you already know. control panel\folder options\view tab and scroll down to the bottom and uncheck show pop up descriptions. You can also go into the registry and delete the tips list completely. Whew. The reason I give you all this is I hate tweak XP as it doesn't do anything that you can't do and adds clutter and takes up space on your OS for no reason. This gives you a start at least. e:mail me if you need more. Good luck.

I don't know. Maybe someone else can help you with that.

You shouldn't get rid of them. You should update when it tells you to.

Get TweakUI from Microsoft here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads
details.aspx?FamilyID=AFA135C8-8B63-4C03-8986-D7F45A6AA1FA&displaylang=en

Note that this url wraps in my newsreader and you'll need to enter it
into your browser's addressbar on one line. You'll be able to remove
the reference to unread emails and turn off the balloon tips.

Cheers,

Hi,

Use TweakUI/Logon/Unread Mail and Repair/Unread Mail Count
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Disable Unread Mail on the Welcome Screen (Line 100)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Overview of Mail Notification Display on WinXP Welcome Screen
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q304/1/48.asp

TweakUI/Taskbar/Uncheck Enable Balloon Tips
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Or use this automated edit:

Disable Balloon Tips or Disable All (Row 11)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Disable All includes: Balloon Tips, Folder Contents Info Tips, Explorer
Pop-Ups, Show Info Tips, Start Menu and Notification Area.

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its Repair - repair Unread mail count allows you to reset it: logon -
Unread Mail allows you to turn the message off altogether
