Unpacking Problem

I have recently built a new pc and installed XP on it. Mostly it seems to be
working fine but i seem unable to install anything downloaded from the
internet, Most things will unpack to a certain point then say the file is
corrupt or unrecognized even though i know they are fine. Any help greatly
appreciated. Any more info that may be of use just tell me.
 
You know they are fine - how?

It sure seems like a corrupted download to me, unless your C: drive is
"very" low on free space, and the downloaded files are quite large.

How do you know they are fine? The last time I saw that happening
consistently, there was bad RAM. Removing it solved the problem. Try
Memtest and see if it finds any errors.

The file may be fine on another system, but damaged when passing through
your system's memory.

I am having the same problem and I think the original poster means that
he/she knows they are fine because multiple downloads are "corrupt". So it
isn't the source of the download. Bad memory is a possibility though
wouldn't I and the original poster be seeing a lot of other system errors if
our memory was bad? Last time I had some bad memory my machine would crash
pretty regularly.

Are there any other suggestions about something on our systems that might be
corrupting the download? (I have over 130 GB of free space so that isn't it.)
