Most exe files corrupt when try to install on xp?

When i try and install software on my PC it downloads or loads from cd.
but just before it finished unpacking the exe i get the message;
"The contents of this file cannot be unpacked. the executable you are
attempting to run has been corrupted. please obtain another copy of the
file, verify its integrity, and try again."
I have tried downloading a number of macromedia products like fireworks
and dreamweaver. I have also got copies on cd. Also tried installing
open office. This error keeps happening.

Any advice to how to fix or what needs to be reinstalled would be most
welcome. Windows xp proffecional

Try:
Empty the Temp Internet folder:
Right click the IE icon on the desktop.
Click Properties > Delete Files button.
Put a check in "Delete all Offline files".
Click Ok > Ok.

Reboot and delete the contents in the Temp folder under your user name:
C:\Documents and Settings\Your user name\Local settings\Temp

Anything in use in the Temp folder you will not be able to delete.

Delete all the contents except Layout.ini in the Prefetch folder:
C:\Windows\Prefetch

Install the latest installer:
