sp1a installation

Perhaps someone can help me.

I have XP Pro, I have downloaded the file xpsp1a_en_x86.exe and when I
run it it just seems to unpack to a directory that it subsequently
deletes.

How does one actually install sp1a? What do I do with the downloaded
file?

Any help appreciated, thanks.

Please - do not multi-post.
If you feel your topic is valid in more than one newsgroup - please

I answered your question in another group - but for your advantage and the
many who may be searching for this answer some time in the future...

First - why Service Pack 1a instead of Windows XP Service Pack 2?
After all - it's not supported any longer:

To download the proper file:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx

You need to have enough space to unpack AND install the service pack.
For more information on what to expect:

However - I suggest you download and install Service Pack 2.
