sp1a install

S

sjewins

Perhaps someone can help me.

I have XP Pro, I have downloaded the file xpsp1a_en_x86.exe and when I
run it it just seems to unpack to a directory that it subsequently
deletes.

How does one actually install sp1a? What do I do with the downloaded
file?

Any help appreciated, thanks.

First - why Service Pack 1a instead of Windows XP Service Pack 2?
After all - it's not supported any longer:
http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifean19

To download the proper file:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp1/default.mspx

You need to have enough space to unpack AND install the service pack.
For more information on what to expect:

However - I suggest you download and install Service Pack 2.

Thanks but still no luck. I can get the 1a pack to unpack to a
directory on C: but when I go to the update subdirectory and try to run
update.exe it pops open an install window and then immediately closes
it. I tried to use the update.msi file but it tells me that I need to
do a "machine assigned" distribution and I have no idea how to do that
or even what it means.

I trued the sp2 and had the problem that it would unpack to a second
harddrive that I have and then immediately delete the directory for me.
That is why I am trying for sp1a, at least I get to keep the unpacked
files.

Thanks,
Simon

You never stated how much free space you have.
You have to have enough on C:\ to install it. Unpacking it on another drive
has nothing to do with it.
How much free space on C:\ do you have?

I have 51 GB free on the C drive (after unpacking the sp1a files).

I am running XP on a Pentium 4 1.5 Ghz with 1 GB of RAM.

I am the owner and have Administrator priv.

Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpclient.010817-1148)

Try running SP2 and look in the event log after (and if) it fails.
Look in the System and Application logs for any warnings/information/errors.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/

S

sjewins

Okay, when I run the SP2 file it creates a directory on C: and extracts
all the files. Then, as I watch, the directory disappears, is deleted
somehow. Neither the application nor the system logs show any events at
that time.

When I run the SP1a file it creates a directory on C: and it remains
there after the extraction is complete. When I run the Update.exe file
(in the update subdirectory created by the extraction) either nothing
happens at all, or an installation dialogue pops up and then goes away
on its own. Nothing appears in the application or system logs for that
event.

Okay...
You may want to verify you have the latest hardware drivers for your
machine.

In addition - you should insert your WIndows XP CD and try the following:

Start button --> RUN --> sfc /scannow

If that doesn't work - it's possible something horrible has happened.
Perhaps a repair installation?

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315341

Also - how long has this system been non-SP'd?
Is this a fresh install?
Can you do it again - but using a slipstreamed with SP2 CD?
(You can create a CD with SP2 and even most post-sp2 patches integrated into
it to use - just with your Windows XP CD you have now - assuming you have an
actual Windows XP CD.)

Thanks very much for your time and your help.

This is getting way too complicated so I have decided to just stay with
what I have (no service packs). All I really wanted from the service
pack was the 48bit LBA support for my large drives. Do you know of any
other way to add that support other than these service packs?

Anyway, thanks again.

Have you tried Windows Update? Let the process begin... All updates are then
in stalled in the proper order.

I have tried Update but it tells me that these are not running:

But, when I check Services it shows that they are running.

Thanks for the suggestion,

Many, many thank-yous.

I went into safe mode and ran the batch and all ran well except for the
rename of catroot2 to catroot2.old so I boot again to a DOS disk and
went to the windows/system32 directory and renamed it manually.

I then ran the Windows Update and BINGO. All worked wonderfully.
Thank-you so much for the effort you put into this.

One last question... do I need to go in and change the catroot2.old
back to catroot2?

Thanks again,

Okay, when I run the SP2 file it creates a directory on C: and
extracts all the files. Then, as I watch, the directory disappears,
is deleted somehow. Neither the application nor the system logs
show any events at that time.
When I run the SP1a file it creates a directory on C: and it remains
there after the extraction is complete. When I run the Update.exe
file (in the update subdirectory created by the extraction) either
nothing happens at all, or an installation dialogue pops up and
then goes away on its own. Nothing appears in the application or
system logs for that event.

I'm going to give you a response that should cover most bases. It
is not mine - but it may do the trick for you...
(It covers a lot of bases.)
Reboot your computer and have nothing open before you start the
steps.... Just log in and follow them, then when it has you
rebooting - first thing you should try ins visiting
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/and seeing what happens (in
Internet Explorer.) Please come back and report!

Thanks for your ongoing help.
I tried as you suggested and when I ran the register.bat most were
okay but the following shows some of the errors that were indicated
in the cmd window...
-----[begin]-----

C:\>regsvr32 jscript.dll /s
C:\>del C:\DOCUME~1\Simon\LOCALS~1\Temp /Q /F
C:\DOCUME~1\Simon\LOCALS~1\Temp\Perflib_Perfdata_748.dat
The process cannot access the file because it is being used by
another process.
C:\>net stop wuauserv
The Automatic Updates service is not started.
More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3521.
C:\>ren C:\WINDOWS\system32\catroot2 catroot2.old
Access is denied.
-----[end]-----

When I subsequently used Windows Update it tells me that these are
not running:
Automatic Updates
Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
Event Log
But, when I check Services it shows that they are running.Reboot into SAFE MODE and run the script there - logon as the actual user
named 'administrator'.

Many, many thank-yous.

I went into safe mode and ran the batch and all ran well except for
the rename of catroot2 to catroot2.old so I boot again to a DOS
disk and went to the windows/system32 directory and renamed it
manually.

I then ran the Windows Update and BINGO. All worked wonderfully.
Thank-you so much for the effort you put into this.

One last question... do I need to go in and change the catroot2.old
back to catroot2?

No.
In fact - you can erase catroot2.old now.

I'm so glad it worked out for you. If you have any more questions - just
ask.
Anytime.

Sorry it took so long to get to the root of the issue.
