Unmountable boot volume

I did this:

1) Win98SE
2) Created partition with PM8.0
3) Installed XPPro
4) Got all hardware running with no ! or ?
5) Matrox G450 dual head working ok and monitors both
flagged as default.
6) Decided to install Matrox software. This caused 2nd
monitor to cease working and only one monitor appear in
hardware manager.
7) Formatted XP partition to re-install and received the
unmountable message.
8) KB suggestions do not seem to help.
a) Cables, bios etc not changed between original
install and re-install attempt.
b) Disk error checks on partition are ok
c) W98SE partition run without problems, ie dual head,
hard disks etc work ok.

Can anyone suggest what might be the problem?

Thanks for your info. 2nd link is unavailable.
1st link requires registration - not my cup of tea.

However, I have found out what the problem was. Boot disk
6 was not written correctly although checking it stated
there were no errors. Re-created the 6 boot disks and then
no problem.

Error message is a complete red herring as the only entry
on the MS web site seems to imply serious hardware
problems.
