Unmountable boot volume

My XP is not working. When the screen flashes to light blue for a second, it looks like "Unmountable boot volume" and then it tries to start up and then the machine "thrashes" and then keeps going back to the black screen with DOS-like print regarding Safe Mode, etc.

I can't locate my "Restore" disks.......what do I do now????

I see that I need the disks, however, we moved and I can't find them. Am I in a lot of trouble in not being able to restore my XP operating system?

I can't even get the machine to go any other screen other than the DOS-like window and information and that it tries to "reboot" and goes back to the same screen. Am I supposed to use a function key or another key to bring it to where it's supposed to be? It sounds like it's powering down when it's trying to start and restart !!
