unknown intenet connection sharing

James

I'm trying to set up my laptop (running XP Home) to my
desktop (running XP Pro) with the Network Setup Wizard.
I'm sharing my internet through a DLink DI-604 router
which shares the intnernet with my desktop, laptop and x-
box.

I can't get either computer to see each other.
The "Internet Connection Settings" area of the end of the
wizard says "Uknown Internet Connection Sharing".

I've been trying to find out how to enable it.. I found
that knowledge base that tells me to go into the Advanced
tab in the Local Area Connection properties box. ALl I
get there is "Internet COnnection Firewall" but no
Internet Connection Sharing area.

Can ANYONE help me out?

Thanks

Your router shares the Internet connection between your computers.
The Wizard's description of an "Unknown" shared connection is OK. It
just means that the router doesn't have a name that it announces on
the network like a computer does.

If your network had an Internet Connection Sharing host computer, the
Wizard would identify it, saying "The wizard found a shared Internet
connection on the computer "NAME."

You can't, and you must not, enable Internet Connection Sharing on
either of your computers, because your router already shares its
Internet connection. Enabling ICS would require that a computer have
two network connections: one for the Internet, and one for the local
area network.

Something else is preventing the computers from seeing each other.
These tips should help you solve the problem:

1. Permanently disable XP's built-in Internet Connection Firewall on
local area network connections -- it's for use only on a direct modem
connection to the Internet. Disable and un-install all other
firewalls while troubleshooting. Details here:

Windows XP Internet Connection Firewall
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/ic_firewall.htm

2. Use only one protocol for File and Printer Sharing. If the network
needs more than one protocol, unbind File and Printer Sharing from all
but one of them. Details here:

Windows XP Network Protocols
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/network_protocols.htm

3. Make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled on all computers.
Details here:

Enable NetBIOS Over TCP/IP (NetBT)
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/troubleshoot/netbt.htm

4. Run "ipconfig /all" on XP and look at the "Node Type" at the
beginning of the output. If it says "Peer-to-Peer" (which should
actually be "Point-to-Point") that's the problem. It means that the
computer only uses a WINS server, which isn't available on a
peer-to-peer network for NetBIOS name resolution.

If that's the case, run the registry editor, open this key:

HLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netbt\Parameters

and delete these values if they're present:

NodeType
DhcpNodeType

Reboot, then try network access again.

If that doesn't fix it, open that registry key again, create a DWORD
value called "NodeType", and set it to 1 for "Broadcast" or 4 for
"Mixed".
