Uninstalling Windows XP

T

Tim Eichner

I'm trying to remove Windows XP Home Edition and install
Windows 98 on an older computer. When I tell Windows 98
setup to format the hard drive, it says there is an error
in the partition, and it cannot continue. How should I
continue? Thanks.

Greetings --

The normal way to "uninstall" _any_ operating system is to format
the hard drive and install a new OS of your choice.

However, if you performed an upgrade from Win98/Me, elected to
backup the old system files, and didn't convert the partition to NTFS,
then all you need do is boot into Safe Mode and Start > Control Panel
Add/Remove Programs. All of these conditions _must_ be met for the
uninstall option to be available.

it is probably an NTFS partition. Boot your 98 startup floppy, from it
(Minimal boot) run
FDISK
Say Y to 'Large Disk Support?'
Use it to
'Delete non-DOS Partition'
'Create DOS Primary Partition' of desired size
Reboot, this time 'With CD support'
FORMAT C:
go to the CD and
SETUP
