uninstalling windows components

I have XP as my OS. I installed Office 97 to get Word as
a word processing program. I had conflicts with Office so
I uninstalled it using the CD. I use Outlook Express as
my default email program but after installing and
uninstalling Office, I cannot get Outlook Express to be
my default email program. Microsoft's KB says to
uninstall then reinstall Outlook Express. I tried to
uninstall Outlook Express through Control Panel/
Add/Remove Programs... I used the wizzard and the program
was still there. Can anyone tell me how to uninstall then
install Outlook Express?

How did you try to make Outlook Express the default?

Did you go to Tools-Options then click on the General tab and click on make
default?

I am not sure that you can uninstall Outlook Express.

Hi, Dan.

IE/OE is an integral part of Windows XP; it doesn't need to be separately
installed and it can't easily be uninstalled. For details, see this KB
article:
How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows
XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q318378

Among other things, that article says, "By default, Internet Explorer 6 is
preinstalled in all versions of Windows XP and cannot be removed." You
said, "Microsoft's KB says to uninstall then reinstall Outlook Express."
WHICH KB article said this? Did that article apply to WinXP?

I'm not sure what you mean that you "uninstalled it [Office 97] using the
CD". Did you not use WinXP's Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs?

A recent (SP1?) addition to Add or Remove Programs is a new icon to Set
Program Access and Defaults. Clicking this icon lets you choose your
default programs for several functions, including email. You should be able
to choose OE here. If you don't see this icon, you may need to visit
Windows Update to be sure that you have all the current fixes for WinXP.

Many users report that Office 97 runs fine in WinXP. If you'd like to try
it again, there is plenty of help in the several Office Discussion Groups.

(And ignore Gator. He (She?) gets his kicks by posting lots of nonsense
messages here.)

Hi dan,

You can't completely uninstall OE via Add/Remove Programs (you can uninstall
any updates to OE, reverting back to the previous version).

To reset OE as your default email program, give this a try.....
Go to Start>Run and key in:
"C:\PROGRAM FILES\OUTLOOK EXPRESS\MSIMN.EXE" /reg
(if the path to MSIMN.EXE differs on your system, modify the above
accordingly)
Click on OK or hit ENTER

After running the above, open IE and go to Tools>Internet Options>Programs
and set OE as the default Email and Newsgroups program.

You'll have to learn to ignore Gator. He responds to many posts with absolute
garbage----six year old talk.

It is possible that only the name in the Add/Remove listing exists. Try to
install. If no success, post back.

Thank you to all that have offered suggestions to help
solve my problem. I am going to try to uninstall/install
IE. That should fix the problem with Outlook Express.

If you are needing as your default e-mail program, you could try Set Program
Access and Defaults (available in SP1).

Go into Control Panel and open Add/Remove Programs
Click "Set Program Access and Defaults"
Click on the "Custom" radio button
Click on the radio button next to "Outlook Express" and press OK.
