I have a similar problem to Frustrated only mine is compounded to the enth
degree.
I upgraded Xp over Win98 and things ran smooth for 3 years. Then like a
jerk, I started deleting things in the registry and really barfed up the
XP's
OS. After trying various techniques to restore, including restore, I
decided
it was time to start from scratch. No, can do. Because XP, in its infinite
capacity to screw things up, says I can't uninstall because I used
powerquest
to partition my drive after I originally installed XP.
I have been trying for the last two days to uninstall XP with everything I
know without success. So, here I sit with a broken and limping OS. Talk
about
fun and games. Whoo-ah!
Anybody got an answer to this dilemna???

Unfortunately the best approach is probably to bite the bullet and reinstall
clean.
If your install is 3 years old, I'd suggest getting a new drive - I see 80
gig drives for about CDN$50. Drives have a limited lifespan (this is what
MTBF, Mean Time Before Failure, means as a drive statistic) and you'll
probably be able to get a faster drive with a bigger cache.
Install this in the place of the existing drive, remove and do not reattach
the old drive till the new install is complete.
When you install, you do *not* have to install w98 first, you simply need to
have the w98 disk on hand for when the XP install asks for it. Let the XP
installer partition and format the disk.
This approach has the advantage of protecting your existing data. Once the
new install is complete, you can simply re-attach the old drive as a
secondary or external drive, and copy the data into place.
You will not, however, be able to copy things like email settings this way.
Those you should export before starting.
