Unable to uninstall Windows XP

Whenever I try to uninstall my Windows XP I get the following message:

Setup cannot uninstall Windows XP because the necessary registration
information is missing,

It is registered but I cannot connect to the internet or access many of my
files so I would just like to uninstall it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You do not "uninstall" XP. Instead, you boot from the CD and perform a clean
install. This is a rather drastic step because you will lose everything. A
clean install formats the partition, and in so doing nothing of what you
have on the disk at present will remain.

Instead, you should try a repair installation first.

However, it seems likely that you should not perform either of these
operations.

Perhaps if you describe your problems more fully, people will be able to
help you solve your problems. I certainly would not reinstall to solve
either of your stated problems.

See "You receive the "Setup cannot uninstall Windows XP because the
necessary registration information is missing" error message when you

I am sorry Jim, you are quite right.
The problem started when I turned on my computer and was unable to boot
because I was told that a system32 file was corrupted and to try and repair
it using the CD. Since I had lost my WindowsXP upgrade CD I tried using my
WindowsXP CD which came with my laptop and was able to boot successfully with
all my files appearing back again except that most of them won't open because
I receive the message: Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or
file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.
When I first booted up after the installation I was asked to register my
WindowsXP which I successfully did using a phone line connection because my
broadband won't work either. I simply keep getting the same message.
I know I did a stupid thing using a WindowsXP disc which was labeled "For
distribution with a new Dell PC only.
Now I would like to find a way to undo the damage while saving my files.
Thanks.

If you can log onto the compuer through the administrator account, you may
be able to fix the
permissions by taking ownership of the files and folders. Help & Support has
detailed instructions.

If this doesn't work, then you remove the drive from the laptop and install
it into a 2.5 inch portable
drive enclosure. Install the disk on another computer (all you would need is
a USB connection). Then copy those files that you really
to a CD disk with the other computer. Since a member of the administrators
group can do whatever is needed whenever
it is needed, do all of this with the administrators account.

Replace the disk in your laptop and make a clean install of Windows XP. Be
certain to install the Dell utilities with the disk
that came with your laptop. The fine manual describes how to do this in
great detail. Finally, after you have the computer
operational, copy your files from the CD to wherever they should go.

I understand the you have a Dell Windows XP CD and that you formerly owned
the XP SP2 upgrade CD.
If you lost the later, you can obtain a copy from Microsoft. If you lost
the former, you can buy a replacement from Dell.
You should also have a Dell utilities disk which you must have in your
possession before starting any of this procedure.

The normal way to "uninstall" any operating system is to format
the hard drive and install a new OS of your choice.
