Uninstalling two copies of Windows XP

About a week ago, I was unable to get Windows to run. When I turned on my
computer, the taskbar wouldn't load, nor would CTRL+ALT+DEL work, so I tried
to use the repair function on the Windows XP reinstall disk to fix it.

That didn't work, so I thought I'd try to just reinstall it and start over.
I did reinstall Windows XP, but the previous version is still installed.
Whenever my computer boots up, it lists the two and asks me to select which
one should boot.

The second installation of Windows XP is still messed up, but in a different
way. It won't allow me to change the screen resolution above 640 x 480 pxs
at 16-bit resolution. It also won't let me update any drivers, or really do
anything, like adding or removing programs.

So, please, how do I fix this?

Oh, and I might have deleted the partition with the registry files on it.
