Two Choices of Same OS

Okay, I followed the directions at
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

But I'm experiencing some weirdness.

First, when I boot, I get a choice of *two* instances of "Microsoft
Windows XP Home Edition."

If I choose the top one, it looks like the clean install worked, but the
desktop has only one icon--the Recycle Bin in the lower right-hand
corner.

Also, I'm unable to alter the display property settings (can't move the
screen resolution slider from 640 by 480 and the drop-down menu for
color quality has Medium--16 bit as the only choice).

If I decide to choose the bottom "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition," I
get the following:

Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware
configuration problem.

Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk
hardware.

Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration
and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.

Should I alter my current installation or start from scratch? Do I need
to FDISK (that wasn't listed on the instructions)? Does having a Dell
make a difference?

I think I figured it out.

The boot.ini file had some extraneous entries, which I cleared.

And once I installed the graphics display driver, I was able to get the
proper screen resolution and color quality.

Now...

When I update to SP2 with my disc, do I need to know anything special?
