In order to install XP from the CD you need to enter the BIOS and set the
boot order...CD as 1st boot....HD as 2nd boot.
Then save the settings and reboot with your XP CD inplace...setup should
start.
What version of XP did you purchase?? What is on your HD now??
If your mobo has SATA drives you will need to place the SATA drivers from
the mobo CD onto a floppy so that during the installation you can load those
drivers via the F6 option.

You say you have purchased XP to put on your PC - what is on it now? It
sounds like XP, but you need to clarify.

When did this start? What changed?

You may not need to reinstall or do a clean install of XP to fix this.
However, if the problem is hardware failure, and this is possible,
reinstalling XP will be neither helpful or successful.

This isn't always true. Many motherboards don't require separate SATA
drivers. Some don't need drivers but DO require specific settings if IDE
channels are also in use (as for the optical drives).

Your right and I believe you corrected me before on this...but by the time
he gets 1/2 way into the installation and finds he does need the drivers its
too late.
