Uninstalling Quicktime

I have a similar problem to many people with regard to Quicktime 7.1.6, in
that after I have installed it I get a plug-in error on any web page which
has a quick time file on. I also have problems getting some of my son's games
to work as it appears that Quick time hasn't installed properly, as it's not
detected by the software.
I am now attempting to remove Quicktime and go back to an earlier version -
however, every time I attempt to remove Quicktime via the Add/Remove Programs
page I get a 'fatal error during installation' message and Quicktime doesn't
get removed. Any ideas how I can get rid of the current version of Quicktime
to get back to a better state ?

Launch Quicktime and go to Edit\Preferences\Quicktime Preferences.

Select the Browser tab and then the MIME Types. Then deselect all of
the file types that are causing the problem with the browser - in my
experience that means everything.

If you then have a QT file on a web page you will be give the option to
download it and run externally to the browser, which seems to work.

I don't think this is a QT specific problem - this version seemed to run
OK when integrated with IE6. Its only since upgrading to IE7 that there
has been a problem here.
