Uninstalling mouse driver

I have a Microsoft IntelliMouse 1.3 A PS/2 Compatible (NOT Optical), which is
behaving erratically - freezing, jumping all over screen, etc. much like
described in other posts.
I have tried cleaning, slowing pointer speed and turning off Enhance pointer
precision, unplugging and plugging it in- none of these actions have worked.

I would like to try uninstalling and re-installing drivers.
They are in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS
i8042prt.sys Version 5.1.2600.1106 8/18/2001
mouclass.sys Version 5.1.2600.1106 8/17/2001

My question is when I uninstall the drivers are they deleted from the hard
disk.?
After I uninstall drivers do I unplug the mouse, reboot and then plug it in-
what is the exact procedure to re-install drivers.

I can’t find any drivers on the OEM CDs provided by Dell- are they part of
the operating system?

I have found Intellipoint 5.2 drivers at Microsoft downloads- will these
work?
If I install Intellipoint 5.2 should I copy my original drivers to another
location first?
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Sounds like a defective mouse, broken wire in the mouse cord, damaged PS/2
connector on the end of the mouse cord or a damaged PS/2 port on the PC.

Try a new mouse in the PS/2 port, and/or a USB mouse.

Remove the mouse from Device Manager. You will be prompted to reboot. The
new drivers will automatically be loaded for you.

I had considered that there may be a physical defect, but had wanted to try
other avenues before spending money. I have also scanned for viruses with
AVG and found none. And neither Spybot or Ad-Aware found anything. My
thinking is that the drivers may have become corrupted somehow.

Regarding Intellipoint 5.2 driver from Microsoft- is this the correct
driver? And if I install it and it doesn't work will the i8042prt.sys and
mouclass.sys files still be on my hard disk and available to be reinstalled?

Also, keep in mind when you remove the mouse from the device manager that
the mouse will no longer work. To reboot, you will have to use the keyboard
ie. Windows Logo key and arrow keys, etc.

The Microsoft Intellipoint 5.2 drivers are the "enhanced" version of the
mouse drivers. It provides enahanced features like "button asignments" and
I fell should only be installed if the "standard" drivers are working.

Turns out my mouse was broken- 2 days with new mouse and everything seems to
be working fine.
