I would like to format my hard drive. I was told to put
cd in and start computer and boot from cd, and I would
find recovery console. I did that and on start up it asks
if I want to start from cd, I hit enter and all it does
is start Windows xp as normal. The first boot in Cmos is
for cdrom. Any help would be greayly appreciated. Sterling

Sounds like you're doing the right things:
Is this the retail XP cdrom or a manufacturers disk?
I would have thought either would have been bootable.
(retail certainly is).
If it's manufacturers, do you have any special instructions?

Instead if hitting enter, did you try hitting the space bar?

This sounds like a problem with either the BIOS of the particular CD -
just which type is it?

You should BTW, not be using the recovery console stage, but go on: .
Enter Setup, and after the license agreement take New Install. When it
asks you to confirm where, hit ESC; select and delete the current
partition and make a new RAW one to be formatted at the next stage
