I tried to boot with win xp cd rom, but it will only
start windows normally. I tried a win98 and it will boot
from floppy. win xp is a retail version cd rom. I have
the first boot in cmos set to cd rom. any ideas how to
make it boot from cdrom? Thanks Sterling

What kind of error message are you getting, if any? Some machine
BIOS's will respond with "press any key to boot from CD ROM" on the
screen before it will actually boot from the CD.

When I boot from CDROM, my computer shows the POST screen, then
flashes a message to the effect of "Press any key to boot from
CD-ROM". If I don't press a key within about five seconds then it
moves on to the next boot device. Watch your screen and see if
something like that is happening.
