Uninstall Problems

I have recently installed Defender but found conflicts with Norton Internet
Security. When unistalling the .MSI file was missing (it went on a temp area
and was 'tidied'. So, now the uninstaller has only partially worked and I
also can't reinstall. Some defender software remains somewhere that still
conflicts with Norton. Can anyone suggest a way forward.

Thanks.

Maybe reinstall - choose repair, then remove?

Martin--if there's something still active, my experience is that only
happens if some form of protective software--perhaps another antispyware
program or add on to one--is interfering with the uninstall.

Here's what I'd do:

1) download the Windows Installer cleanup utility
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;en-us;290301

(use the download link in the above article, install, then do Start, and
find it in the All Programs list, and run it.)

Remove both Windows Defender signatures, and Windows Defender itself.

Then reinstall Windows Defender. Following that, please disable or turn off
as much other software that always runs as you can--real time antivirus
scanning, any other antispyware software, etc. Then do the remove via add
or remove programs in control panel.

Please do all these operations as an administrator on the machine.

This is basically what Steve was recommending, I think, but with some
details filled in...

Just trying this proved to me that something was badly wrong ... it turned
out with my registry. SO BAD that a fresh format and reinstall on XP was
necessary.

Thanks for the help

Bill, Thanks for the detailed help. I tried to install the Install Cleanup
program but the installer itself was screwed - turned out the registry was
badly in a mess, so fomat and reinstall of XP followed. All OK now.

Many thanks,

Martin
