uninstall of old version requires installation file

G

Guest

Hello everyone,
Installation of the beta2 version requires the unistall of the old version.
Uninstall of the version I have installed requires the original .msi file
which I have since deleted. Microsoft download does not seem to provide the
older version anymore and I appear to be stuck with the older version now.
Any suggestions? Apart from "don't delete a .msi until you have uninstalled
a program and know that you will never want to install it again."?

Try going to the following link and then download an older version.
Good luck.

Thanks guys..
I tried all this but no luck.. I actually have the version before beta2.
It's Defender also not antispyware.. nothing worked..

I'm a bit confused. Beta 1 was called Microsoft Anti-Spyware. Beta 2 is
called Windows®Defender. There has never been a requirement to un-install
previous versions of Beta 2 before upgrading to a new release of the Beta 2
GUI, which currently is:
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0

You should be able to just install a new download of Defender from
Microsoft over the top of any prior version of Defender. But it's best to
download to your desktop, disable your Anti-Virus RTP, shutdown any open
Windows Explorer sessions and exit Windows Defender, then double click the
download. Remember to re-enable your Real Time Anti-Virus protection
after the install.

Guys thank your for the replies and sticking with this.
I'm confused too.. and a little irritated!

I currently have this version installed:
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1508.0
Signature Version: 1.14.1637.1

This is the first time I've run into this issue. Basically when I try to
install the new version [This is an updated build of Windows Defender Beta 2,
version 1.1.1347.0. If your copy of Windows Defender informed you that an
update is available, you are running an older version. We encourage you to
upgrade to this updated version] .

When I double click this file (after closing all progs, stopping all NAV
services etc.) I see this message half way thru the installation: ""The
installed product does not match the installation source(s). Until a
matching source is provided or the installed product and source are
synchronized, this action can not be performed.""

When I point it to the older versions of the msi installation file or even
the new version I get this message: ""
The file C:\Downloads\WindowsDefender.msi is not a valid installation
package for the product Window sDefender. Try to find the installation
package ‘WindowsDefender.msi’ in a folder from which you can install Windows
Defender.""

then I see this: ""The older version of Windows Defender cannot be removed.
Contact your technical support group.""

Then when I try to use Add/Remove Programs to remove Defender, it prompts me
again for the installation file: ""The installed product does not match the
installation source(s). Until a matching source is provided or the installed
product and source are synchronized, this action can not be performed.""

After providing practically every version of defender msi i downloaded from
Filehippo.com it tells me this: ""The older version of Windows Defender
cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group.""

Pretty insane!

Yeap things get pretty complex, sorry about sending you back to Ms
Anti-Spyware, since it just expired I assumed that's what you meant about
the old version, but now I see what your doing, which is just updating the
Defender User Interface version.

Try this, locate your file msi.dll and let us know what the version is from
it's properties or just passing your cursor over it. If it's not the
latest which is 3.1.4000.2435, you should download and install this update
from an admin authority login.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/893803/

At the same time it's a good idea to ensure all your Windows Updates are
current:
Go to Windows Update, select Express (Get high-priority updates),
and apply all offered updates:

http://update.microsoft.com

Now try that install of the WD User Interface version 1.1.1347.0

There's another option as well which is the windows installer cleanup
utility, however it has side consequences with office updates, so we
haven't been recommending it lately. Do you have Ms office installed?

Round and round we go. OK here's my final take on it... But first did you
actually try to re-install WindowsDefender.msi from Filehippo build 1.051
or just download it to your downloads folder? I'm figuring that install
would have failed as well if you had tried.

Since you do have office I'd not use the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility.
Although I believe it would solve this problem for you, it could break your
ability to update office later which is worse than not having the Defender
UI current.

So what I'd do is try this, download CCleaner from here:
http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp
Get the slim build, assuming you prefer to work in English, and install it.
Shutdown Windows Defender from the Help/About down arrow.
In CCleaner on the Cleaner button, tab to Windows clear all boxes under
Advanced and anything else you don't want cleaned, tab to applications
unselect Windows Defender at the minimum as it breaks the scan history in
WD
Select the Tools button > Uninstall > select Windows Defender and Windows
Defender Signatures. Run the un-installer.
Select Issues > Check All > Scan for Issues > Fix selected Issues > Backup
changes to the registry > Yes
Save the backup to My Documents then > Fix all Selected Issues.
Now try the new WD install if you have succeeded in removing the old one.

Sorry, I can't think of much more to try in your situation.

Hi Running_Down

You should read Dave M's suggestion to get your problem solved.
I had exactly the same but followed Dave M's instructions and it did work!

He wrote:
"Disable your Anti-Virus RTP, shutdown any open
Windows Explorer sessions and exit Windows Defender"

Open Windows Defender-click Tools-in Settings: click Options-scroll down to
Real-time protection options and unmark: Use real-time protection-scroll down
and click Save.
Shut down WD completely even in the taskbar!(right-click-shutdown)

Close all browsers after you downloaded WD(Beta 2) to desctop.

THEN IT'LL INSTALL WD(Beta2) WITHOUT PROBLEMS!
It did for me :)
Good luck!

and apply all offered updates:

http://update.microsoft.com

Now try that install of the WD User Interface version 1.1.1347.0

There's another option as well which is the windows installer cleanup
utility, however it has side consequences with office updates, so we
haven't been recommending it lately. Do you have Ms office installed?

Guys thank your for the replies and sticking with this.
I'm confused too.. and a little irritated!

I currently have this version installed:
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1051.0
Engine Version: 1.1.1508.0
Signature Version: 1.14.1637.1

This is the first time I've run into this issue. Basically when I try
to
install the new version [This is an updated build of Windows Defender
Beta 2,
version 1.1.1347.0. If your copy of Windows Defender informed you that
an
update is available, you are running an older version. We encourage
you
to
upgrade to this updated version] .

When I double click this file (after closing all progs, stopping all
NAV
services etc.) I see this message half way thru the installation:
""The
installed product does not match the installation source(s). Until a
matching source is provided or the installed product and source are
synchronized, this action can not be performed.""

When I point it to the older versions of the msi installation file or
even
the new version I get this message: ""
The file C:\Downloads\WindowsDefender.msi is not a valid installation
package for the product Window sDefender. Try to find the
installation
package 'WindowsDefender.msi' in a folder from which you can install
Windows
Defender.""

then I see this: ""The older version of Windows Defender cannot be
removed.
Contact your technical support group.""

Then when I try to use Add/Remove Programs to remove Defender, it
prompts
me
again for the installation file: ""The installed product does not
match
the
installation source(s). Until a matching source is provided or the
installed
product and source are synchronized, this action can not be
performed.""

After providing practically every version of defender msi i downloaded
from
Filehippo.com it tells me this: ""The older version of Windows
Defender
cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group.""

Pretty insane!

:

I'm a bit confused. Beta 1 was called Microsoft Anti-Spyware. Beta 2
is
called Windows®Defender. There has never been a requirement to
un-install
previous versions of Beta 2 before upgrading to a new release of the
Beta 2
GUI, which currently is:
Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0

You should be able to just install a new download of Defender from
Microsoft over the top of any prior version of Defender. But it's
best
to
download to your desktop, disable your Anti-Virus RTP, shutdown any
open
Windows Explorer sessions and exit Windows Defender, then double
click
the
download. Remember to re-enable your Real Time Anti-Virus
protection
after the install.

This works !! (tried several other suggestions before, but it's best to have
the old msi file, and you can download them all at filehippo)
