I've just received my machine back from repair with more problems than
before and I've no wish to let *them* get their hands on it ever again.
The original problem was that I could'nt launch certain apps from the
desktop -i.e. things like Windows Explorer and My Computer.
I would double-click them, the hour-glass would appear for about 5 seconds
and then revert back to the mouse pointer without launching the program. Not
all apps were like this - e.g. IE6, Word & Excel were all *launchable*. A
further problem was that the machine was altogether working more slowly
than before by a factor of about 5x.. All of this came about quite
suddenly and was _not_ subsequent to any new s/ware or h/ware being added.
What's more NAV was still operational and found nothing.
The repair shop tells me that all they could do was to re-install XP but
they did it as a sort of second installation i.e. they installed to a folder
called *windows2* i.e. they did not overwrite the original *windows* folder.
Of course, I cannot verify this because Explorer's not working.
Now when I boot I can choose between the installations but the second one ,
of, course, does not have all the original apps. and settings.
Two questions: 1) Any ideas as to what the original problem was and how
to fix it?
2) Can I safely remove (and how) this 2nd.
*windows2* installation?
Many thanks in advance
