Unexpected restart installation failure

I need some help with installation of Vista RC1 64bit. On the final stage of
installation I get this message:

"THE COMPUTER RESTARTED UNEXPECTEDLY OR ENCOUNTERED AN UNEXPECTED ERROR.
WINDOWS INSTALLATION CANNOT PROCEED. TO INSTALL WINDOWS, CLICK OK TO RESTART
THE COMPUTER AND THEN RESTART THE INSTALLATION."

Of course I click the restart icon. The system reboots and returns to the
installation process screen and then displays the same message again.
I have done a re-install with the same results.

The only things in the case are the Video card (PCI express 16, Audigy SB,
and the usual built in components, sound(disabled), lan etc.) Dual 200Gb sata
Hdd's (dual boot, XP & Vista), 1 160GB ide(slave), 2 dvd/rw drives, floppy.
2Gb DDR. Asus A8R-MVP mobo.

I'm goin to reformat this drive and try again in case there's some hard
drive error causing it but, I'm not holding out much hope.

Any idea's?

Hi Jay--

Ck any bios settings for SATA but I assume that your Bios is going to handle
your SATA drive automatically. You may need to load a SATA driver prior to
starting setup, check with the
system manufacturer for a current version. My understanding is that
increasingly, at least with RC1 and more so RC2 now, most SATA drivers are
included but someone who has tested this extensively should weigh in.

As Paul Smith posted previously as to RC1:

"It has a lot of SATA drivers built in now. However it is by no means all
SATA controllers.

On two of my machines, only the Silicon Image controller (which is a
secondary controller) doesn't have drivers, both the VIA onchip (on the same
board) and the nVidia on my other machine do."

Take a look at this post from Alex Chumut this group Sept 25, 06:

"Just for public information, the testers of our software determined that if
a SATA HDD is connected to the first SATA plug, RC1 can throw BSOD during
installation. Changing to a non-first SATA plug solves this issue.
The particular HW configuration does not seem to matter, since we're seeing
this happening on different machines and it might not be reproduced for the
exctly same machines."

You might try disconnecting the SATA HD and see now if Windows Update can
supply the drivers because I understand MSFT is adding signed drivers to
Windows Update or if you use the updated version that has been out and has a
much Better BITS that MSFT completely fails to educate people on MSFT
Update--even in the Vista chats and the IE team chats the Vista team members
continue to refer to Windows update and the other day I got a flippant and
brain dead response from a member of the IE team as to why they do this
which was lol brimming with Redmond Arrogance that must be in the water "we
have our reasons." Really intelligent answer from a MSFT software
engineer--hope the IE team archives that part of the chat.


Not preaching, but check your burn and try to reburn:

The most common causes of your problem far and away statistically are a
problem with a truncated download at some point corrupting your ISO or a
problem with the burn.

1) Burn slowly. 4X should be fine. Some of this probably varies with the
DVD writer
and the media.

2) Make sure to select an ISO tab if there is one on the burning software,
and make sure to close the session on the burn.

3) Try this tweak on your Windows XP drive and burn from there:

Get to Dev Manager by typing devmgmt.msc in run/win key + pause break or
Rt.click My Computer>Prop>hardware tab>Device Manager if you like 5 steps
instead of one cmd. If you're set to PMI here change to DMO and if set to
DMO change to PMI using these 5 steps:

1) Click the + in front of IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers
2) Double Click the Secondary IDE Controller
3) Click Advanced Settings
4) Under Device 1  Next to Transfer Mode choose DMA (or vise versa)>Click
OK
5) Reboot your System

6) Check your burn with a CRC utility ; I don't know exactly which build
you're using see if one is included here or search for one via a search
engine.

I strongly urge you to use a CRC checker or the one built in to your burning
software to check your burn.
