Can not complete Vista installation

Hello,

I need some help with installation. On the final stage of installation the
screen goes blank and nothing happens. I have to do a restart. Then I get
this message:

"THE COMPUTER RESTARTED UNEXPECTEDLY OR ENCOUNTERED AN UNEXPECTED ERROR.
WINDOWS INSTALLATION CANNOT PROCEED. TO INSTALL WINDOWS, CLICK OK TO RESTART
THE COMPUTER AND THEN RESTART THE INSTALLATION."

I tried three times. Same things keeps happening.

What do you think the problem is? Is it hardware related?
Windows XP runs fine on it. I did a memory test and passed.
The hard drive and video card is brand new. I did the pre-install test and
passed that too. I am trying to do a clean install on a second HD.

I am the "boot manager". I turn on or off the two OS HDs in
CMOS.

The self built system: Abit KD7-RAID, Maxtor 200 gig HD X 2,
p2700 333mhz ram, athlon xp 2700 at 2.1gig,
ati radeon 9600 with 256 megs.

Thank you.

Need a little more information...

Is this an upgrade (from within Windows) or clean (from booted DVD) install?

Are all external devices disconnected?

I've read in this NG that one may have to actually uninstall some
applications, especially AV, when doing an upgrade...

Sorry about the lack of info.
I am trying to do a clean install on a brand new totally blank just out of
the box Maxtor 200 gig HD.

I disconnected the USB webcam and scanner because they can not be powered
down manually, but it made no difference. The printer is plugged in but
turned off. So is the external fax modem. I don't think the speakers would
bother anything. I could actually turn off the external ports in CMOS.

I am suspecting the new video adapter. Win XP had trouble with it also until
I updated drivers. I got it for the aero thingy. I will try to put back the
old Mad Dog card with 64MB and post back.

Thanks for trying to help.

Yes, that was it. It's the video card. It did install well with the old one.
But now I can not get the aero.

The new card works with Win XP. How can I make it work with Vista? I can
only start in safe mode when I use the new card. It's a problem with the
driver. There are no updated drivers available.

The one that does NOT work with Vista is ATI Radeon 9600 LE 256MB AGP 8X Video Card.

The old one is Mad Dog Prowler MX440-SE AGP - 64MB NVIDIA

Thank you.

I just went to ATI website and found updated drivers.
Those do work. One problem solved. Thank you.
