I downloaded an OEM version with serial number from topdownloads but the
program falls foul of the Validation Program and cannot download latest
versions i.e. Internet Explorer 7 and Media Player 11. I want to get Vista
OEM version but am I going to have same problem?

Of course you will have the same problem if you download and install a
pirated version. Microsoft operating systems aren't free. If you want to
download a free operating system, try one of the many Linux distros.

I paid oem-avenue about £70 to buy OEM version so I don't think it was
pirated software as OEM vesions are given with other makes of computers
including Windows Media Centre

Your original post said nothing about an OEM version, simply that you
had downloaded XP and a key from "topdownloads". I suggest you contact
"oem-avenue" and have them solve your problem with the software they
sold you.

If you downloaded it over the internet you are out the 70 pounds. seems
the crooks are getting smarter and richer.

MS OS software is not available for download except from an MS site, such as
Windows Marketplace. If you actually bought an OEM version of XP online and
downloaded it, then it's not legitimate. If you mean something else by
"download" such as you mean it came on a CD and you tried to install from
the CD, then contact the vendor you bought it from.

Topdownloads bills itself as as: "topdownloads is the source for free Music
files, games, desktop themes, screen savers and the latest computer
software."

You don't think that downloading "free Music files, games, desktop themes,
screen savers and the latest computer software" is piracy? Who do you think
you're kidding?

I forgot where I paid for and downloaded the OEM version. I mistakenly stated
it was topdownloads but it was oem-avenue who supply licence keys for the
software

Then contact them.

If you persist in using pirated software, certainly. There is no
legitimate source for downloading Microsoft operating systems, unless
you have a very expensive MDSN subscription, and download directly from
Microsoft.

Then you were defrauded. There are *NO* legitimate avenues via which
one can download an OEM license.

Actually Bruce, anyone can purchase and download Vista without an MSDN
Subscription, links to purchase and download Vista are on Microsoft's
site. But I hasten to add that those who choose to purchase and
download should be EXTREMELY careful as to where they buy and download!
There are sure to be abuses and scam artists who will try to pass
themselves as legitimate sources and I am sure that we will see many
posts to these groups from people who have been scammed and ripped off!
I also think that buying the download only and not spending a few
extra dollars for the real DVD is a bad idea.

However, as you said, I don't think that Windows versions prior to Vista
can be purchased and downloaded over the internet and I would caution
buyers to not consider buying Windows XP by download.

Ah! That's something new, then; but it wouldn't apply in the OP's
case, as a different web site was specified.

How very, very true!

I also think that buying the download only and not spending a few extra

Agreed. How many people will download, *NOT* burn the files to a disk,
and then lose everything when a hard drive fails? And then blame
Microsoft for their own lack of foresight?

However, as you said, I don't think that Windows versions prior to Vista
can be purchased and downloaded over the internet and I would caution
buyers to not consider buying Windows XP by download.

It is not a legitimate site. MS OS software can only be downloaded
legitimately from Windows Marketplace or with a MSDN or TechNet
subscription.
