Unable to troubleshoot slow shutdown

Very new Dell Optiplex GX280
Windows XP Pro, SP2

Characteristics: After START-Shutdown, there is a couple minute delay
before the Restart/Shutdown window appears. After clicking Restart or
Shutdown, it takes another couple minutes to shutdown.
This does not occur until the PC has been ON for about 30 minutes.

Troubleshooting:
--It is possible the issue correlates with installation of SP2, but this is
not definite.
--BIOS updated
--All windows updates installed
--Check for driver updates
--per web search suggestion, ATI video adaptor, so no NVIDIA service running
--per web search suggestion, verified clearpagefile disabled
--stopped all processes related to hp 7550 printer
--per web search suggestion, removed Easy CD Creator 5
--stopped d-link wireless utility, wireless config through windows

Has it always done this? Did you install anything or make any changes
prior to it's first occurence?
I've never heard of a delay before the shutdown/restart box appears.
Set a restore point, so you can revert back quickly.
Try the msconfig/startup tab.
Uncheck everything and retry. If still doing it,
I would also disable all non-MS services from msconfig/services tab.
Select "hide all MS services" then disable the rest.
If's it's fixed, start adding the
items back and retrying each time.
This kind of thing is standard troubleshooting.
It's laborious, but it's the best way unless you can point to
something directly.
Another thing to try. Open a CMD box and type
shutdown -s

SP2 adds some items to the os,thiers a couple of areas that
effect shut-down,in system properties,advanced,start-up,in the scroll
bar, "fast detect" should be the last 2 words, otherwise edit, and delete
the rest.In C: drive,open,user accounts,make sure accounts arent
duplicated with another folder,if so delete them.

Dave,

Thanks very much for your suggestions. I finally got a chance to work on
the misbehaving computer today. I think you got me on the right path.
