Unable to run programs

Fred

I am trying to download and run iTunes on the a Vista machine but it won't
run the program.

I tried to Run iTunes from the apple web site but after downloading the file
it says program is blocked because the publisher is unknown.
I then Saved the download to the C: drive and tried running from there but
also got an error saying iTunes stopped.

I have tried other programs such as Skype with the same result. Is this
caused by a setting in Vista. I was logged into the vista PC with
administrator rights.

Thanks for any help

Try right clicking the file you downloaded and
select
Run as Administrator

If that does not work still.

Try right clicking the install file and
select properties and then click on the
compatibility tab.
Check the
Run this program in compatibility mode and
choose WinXP.

Hope one of these helps ya.

Its a vista setting on your pc, iTunes installs fine on Vista, no
compatibility work around required

I like to put the clickable things or such on a single lines.
Nothing wrong with the formatting, only things wrong with me.

Hi James,

thanks for the reply but that didn't help. I tried both suggestions but I
still "iTunes Program has stopped" and then the usual send an error message.

Any other ideas?

Did you by any chance play in the
group policy settings or any security settings lately?
Or could anyone else have on that computer?

F

Fred

Its quite possible. Its not my machine but the owner says its been like this
from new.
What settings would affect the program running?

S

Spaceman

Is it by any chance Vista Business or Vista Ultimate?
If not then such a setting is not even applicable.

OK,
Yes it does if some settings were changed by anyone.
Lets have you check the local security policy setting then.
follow along.

Start
Control Panel
System and Maintenance
Administrative Tools
Local Security Policy
Local Policies
Security Options
check near the bottom kinda for
User Account Control - Detect Application installations and promt
for elevation.
should be enabled
and.
User Account Control - Only elevate executables that are signed
and validated.
should be disabled.

This is the only things right now I can think could be causing your problem.
I hope those are the problem and all will be ok for ya.
You can read about the settings on each in the properties boxes of them
to see why I might think they could be the problem.

Setting like this are usually for an Enterprise type setup to
stop users from installing programs.

F

Fred

Thanks for that but I'm afraid that didn't help.

Both of those settings were already set as you suggested.

Darn it,
:(

Can you run normal programs at all like
calc.exe or Internet Explorer?
and
Does Windows update work for you?

F

Fred

Yes it runs all the programs that come installed including Office 2007. It
also does windows updates OK.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe one more setting in
that same Security Options place
Start
Control Panel
System and Maintenance
Administrative Tools
Local Security Policy
Local Policies
Security Options
check near the bottom

User Account Control -Virtualize file and registry write failures to
per-user locations.
Should be enabled.

If that is not it, I am sorry to say I do not
have any other thoughts right now.
:(
