Unable to run chkdsk.

Frank Martin

I cannot defragment my C: drive because of a message saying
a chkdsk is pending on it.

Yet when I try to run the chkdsk nothing happens.

How can I fix this?

Please help, Frank

Thanks, yes I do but on restart the computer starts as
normal without running chkdsk.
I use "chkdsk /f" in the Run window.

Open a command prompt window and execute these commands:

To view all parameter switches for this utility. (FYI only)
chkntfs /?

To restore the system to normal behavior:
chkntfs /d

To check the status of the drive:
chkntfs c:

If it reports a DIRTY drive, do this to schedule a manual chkdsk at the next
startup:
chkntfs /c c:

Then close this window, restart the system and then try to defrag after restart.

If it reports the drive NOT dirty simply close the window and try to defrag
again.

Thanks, I did this for all cases but the resultant DOS
window flashes up for an instant and disappears.

Second try:

I opened the DOS window and typed in the commands you gave.

I checked the status of the drive with the "chkntfs c:" and
it confirmed that the disk IS dirty, and gave a message:
"Correcting error in index $130 for file 166716"

I then typed in the "chkntfs /c c:" and restarted the
computer, but it started without doing a chkdsk, so the
problem remains.

Can you start the Recovery Console from the installation disk?

If so, then try running : chkdsk c: /p from there....

Thanks, this is what I did.

I put the installation disk into drive F:

Then, from the DOS window...

C:\F:

F:\chkdsk c: /p

error(invalid parameter - /p)

then...

F:\>chkdsk c:
gives...

The type of the file system is NTFS
Volume label is system
WARNING! F parameter not specified.
Running CHKDSK in read-only mode
CHKDSK is verifying files <stage 1 of 3>...

Deleting index entry CANF72PG in index $I30 of file 61381

then I tried...

F:\>chkdsk /f

this returns...

Using the Recovery Console, enter this command:

C:>\chkdsk /p c:

(Don't change drive letters)

Don't try, try, try... do.

If chkdsk is pending, it should run when you restart. If it does not,
you have a problem. Start with just getting chkdsk to run manually
first. You need to run it from the Recovery Console.

You can boot into Recovery Console if you have RC installed on your
HDD, you have a bootable XP installation CD (not the same as a CD from
the manufacturer.

If you are not sure of your media situation and RC options, there is a
100% sure way to be sure. Make your own.

You can make a bootable Recovery Console CD by downloading an ISO file
and burning it to a CD.

The same XP Recovery Console commands can be run from the bootable
Recovery Console CD.

The bootable ISO image file you need to download is called:

xp_rec_con.iso

Download the ISO file from here:

http://www.mediafire.com/?ueyyzfymmig

Use this free and easy program to create your bootable CD:

http://www.imgburn.com/

It would be a good idea to test your bootable CD on the computer that
is working.

You may need to adjust the computer BIOS settings to use the CD ROM
drive as the first boot device instead of the hard disk. These
adjustments are made before Windows tries to load. If you miss it,
you will have to reboot the system again.

When you boot on the CD, follow the prompts:

Press any key to boot from CD...

The Windows Setup... will proceed.

Press 'R' to enter the Recovery Console.

Select the installation you want to access (usually 1: C:\WINDOWS)

You may be asked to enter the Administrator password (usually empty).

You should be in the C:\WINDOWS folder. This is the same as the C:
\WINDOWS folder you see in explorer.

RC allows basic file commands - copy, rename, replace, delete, cd,
chkdsk, fixboot, fixmbr, etc.

From the command prompt window run the chkdsk command on the drive
where Windows is installed to try to repair any problems on the
afflicted drive. Running chkdsk is fine to run even if it doesn't
find any problems.

Assuming your boot drive is C, run the following command:

chkdsk C: /r

Let chkdsk finish and correct any problems it might find. It may take
a long time to complete or appear to be 'stuck'. Be patient. If the
HDD light is still flashing, it is doing something. Keep an eye on
the percentage amount to be sure it is still making progress. Run it
again if you need to feel sure about it.

Type 'exit' and then remove the CD and restart the computer.

You do not have to adjust the BIOS again to boot on the HDD since the
CD will not be present.

Thank you.

I have done all you said and downloaded the microsoft file
and the imgburn software and made the Recovery Console CD.

I loaded this CD into the drive and restarted the computer,
and entered the "R" section in the DOS system.

The command promp said C:> but I could not change this to
C:Windows:>.

Nevertheless I typed in "chkdsk C: /r" and the computer
returned:

"This volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable
errors."

It gave the same message to:
"chkdsk D: / r" and chkdskE: /r" too, even these may be
chkdsked from windows normally.

Does this mean I have a damaged HDD?

I did try all these but still I had no luck.
I downloaded a software package called "DiskCheck" and it
discovered the following:

****
Pre-Scanning...
Warning: Can't get attributes: C:\pagefile.sys
Error accessing drive:
C:\WINDOWS\repair\Backup\ServiceState\ConfigDirectory3b18\

Path/File access error C:\Documents and Settings\All

******

Do these errors relate to the dskchk problem?
