Chkdsk does not run, Defrag does not run, HEEELP please!

XP Pro SP2 is my OS

When I start some (2 or 3)programs I get the message about Corrupt files in
Temporary Internet Files/Content.IE5 and asks to run Chkdsk /f . I tried to
run it but got the message "Cannot open volume for direct access".

Fsutil says C: is dirty but Disk Management finds C Healthy (System) and not
At risk.

Of course because there is a chkdsk asked, defrag does not run until chkdsk
is done, which chkdsk I cannot run. What on earth should I do? Please help!

A! All these on Windows XP Pro SP2! So, Chkdsk at start up should run
(shouldn't it?), but it doesn't.

I would do this:
1. Reboot.
2. Log on under a different admin account.
3. Blow away the offending "Content.IE5" folder.

Normally CHKDSK >>never<< runs on C:\ from within XP.

Usually it asked if you want the CHKDSK to run during the next reboot, you
say "Y", and then reboot, and it does it.

Alternatively, run CHKDSK C: /R (note: /R not /F) from the XP recovery
console, which can be run from the XP CDROM or from a multiple-floppy set
available as a free down load from Microsoft. The latter is called XP setup
disks by Microsoft.

Here are some links about the recovery console:

http://www.wown.com/j_helmig/wxprcons.htm
http://www.xxcopy.com/xxcopy33.htm (near bottom)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_rec.htm
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

Note that it is possible to install the recovery console on your PC and then
it will appear as an alternative to booting into XP. One or more of the
links explain the details.

If the recovery console asks for a password, try just hitting return. If
that fails, try the password of the person who installed XP. If XP was
pre-installed, contact the PC maker. Or, try this registy hack to avoid the
need to enter a password:

Instead, just run REGEDIT and change two things that appear on the same
page:

Start à Run à Regedit

Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\RecoveryConsole

Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1

Thanx guyz, at least chkdsk is done, I sheduled it to run at system start and
then I reboot in Safe Mode. Whatever was stopping chkdsk to run and got
"cannot open volume for direct acces" message, didn't load in Safe Mode, so
chkdsk worked. I'm still trying to find out why is taking so long for windows
to start up and shut down...
