I've read and tried solutions about similar problems in other posts, but they
haven't worked with me. (Running XP SP2)
Using Diskeeper, I tried to run a boot-time defrag along with chkdsk. The
defrag failed (another issue for another time), and chkdsk did not run
either. Now whenever I try to do a regular defrag with Diskeeper, it won't
run because it says that chkdsk is scheduled to run at next boot. But, I've
rebooted numbers of times and chkdsk does not run.
How do I force chkdsk to run on booting? I've tried running chkdsk /f in a
dos box. It reports it will run at next boot up. Sometimes it does and
sometimes it doesn't.
When it does run, I get the error msg Cannot Get Direct Access to the drive,
and stops without doing anything. I read somewhere that ZoneAlarm firewall
can cause that, so I've temporarily uninstalled it. But that didn't help.
Also, run in dos box: fsutil dirty query c:, it reports c: is dirty. If I
can't get chkdsk to run, can someone point me to the location in the registry
where "dirty" is stored so I can change it to "clean". Then I'd be able to
run Diskeeper again
