Unable to rip CDs

Since installing WMP10 I have been unable to rip CDs - keep getting the error
message 'Windows Media Player encountered an unknown error' without an error
code. Everything esle seems ok but only use WMP to rip & play music.
Went into Control Panel to uninstall it and hopefully revert to WMP9 but
found no trace of any WMP progs.

I'm extremely angry with microsoft now, and i think its related to Earworm's
problem. Windows Mediaplayer 10 has been r-downloaded since i changed to
automatic updates, and succombed to the Service Pack 2 Security Nazi's. Even
though i've had my XP Professional for over 3 years, Windows Media Player 10
treats me like a new user asking me to check off on a masssive "I Accept"
security disclaimer, which i won't do. I've also turned off Automatic
Updates. I feel like my Computer feature's usability is being taken away
from me. I can't play my entire library of WMA files now. I tried to use
i-tunes as a 'work-around' to cicumvent this irritating microsoft
devolopment, and have nearly eaten up all my memory. I would like my
original software back, how to I BOOT Windows Media Player 10 from my HARD
DRIVE, AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, go back to doing my manual updates. I feel like
the Auto updates has done irreparable damage to my ability to go back to my
computer's previous "nazi-free" usability

What are you actually asking for? You ask how to turn off automatic updates
and then say you've already done it.
