Unable to reuse hostname

I've demoted a DC to be a member server using DCPROMO and change the IP
address. The process was successfull. The DC is now a member server. However
when i ping the member server, it shows the IP address of the DC and not the
new IP address of the member server. I've remove it from the domain but now
I'm not able to join it back to the domain. Kindly help. Thanks

Hello zerhyr,

Was the old one also an DNS server? Then chekc the DNS console properties
if it still exists and take it out from the DNS server list. Also run ipconfig
/registerdns on the demoted machine.

Hello Meinolf,

Yes the old one was also a DNS server. We've taken it out from the console.
Now it does not exist. When ping it does not resolve with the domain name,
only the host name. Id there any way to find out who is holding to the
hostname?

Hello zerhyr,

Do you have more then one DNS server? Check that the old entries are all
gone. Do you have run ipconfig /registerdns on the demoted machine?

Hi Meinolf,
Yes, I've more than one DNS server. I've removed all the entry. When I run
ipconfig /all /registerdns, I'll get below error
Windows 2000 IP Configuration

Error: The system cannot find the file specified.
: Refreshing DNS names

Hello zerhyr,

To register DNS correct the DHCP client service has to run and set to automatic
startup. Check it and try again.

Hi Meinolf,
Thanks for the help. I'm able to register the dns. I'm also able to join the
server to the domain. However, I'm prompted that 'Duplicate name exist in the
network'. I'm not able to find the host name in the DNS server. When ping the
server, it shows another ip address and not the current one

Using WINS? If so, check WINS for the entry. Also if a group, username,
workgroup name, etc, are identical, it will also report as a dupe name.

Hi Ace,
Thanks, The entries are in the WINS. I have stopped using WINS but the
services are still running. I have deleted the entries and all are fine now.
