unable to read cd on burned on Windows XP

I have Windows 2000 on my laptop at home, and XP at work.
I am unable to read disks created at work in my laptop.
I have already downloaded service pack 4. Any ideas.
 
It will be a cd rom drive issue. Probably an older drive with cheap media.
If your drive is 8 times speed then that explains it. These were a problem.
