Unable to print Notepad document

I have a HP DeskJet 842C. A strange thing happened a week ago. Suddenly I
was unable to print a Notepad document. I've uninstalled and then
reinstalled drivers from both Microsoft and HP. Any suggestions?

I have the same problem suddenly on HP 845C....
although XP acknowledges turning the printer on/off and the printer goes
through the motions of printing, there is no output.
can't print from ANY applic.
can't do align print heads, can't print a test page
BUT, I can do a clean print heads and that comes out fine.
Tried re-installing the driver BUT it was unable to locate the printer on
USB001 although looking at status it shows that it's ready AND on USB001
