unable to open excel or word files after windows 2000 installation

I have a folder of my excel files and a folder of my word
files. I have MS Office 2000 up to date. after I installed
Windows 2000 every EXCEL or WORD file I try to OPEN
retiurns with a message 'UNABLE TO READ FILE'. If I create
a new file I get the same thing. I updated Windoes 2000
with all of the fixes also. I am dead in the water with
respoect to EXCEL and WORD. Any clues would be appreciated.
