Unable to logon to Windows

Background: Using Window XP V5.1 Build 2600 - SP2, In event log I see that
MSXML 4.0 SP2 (KB927978) update to Windows(auto update) had just completed
successfully.
Next I get an error Windows unable to load resistry, next error is about
windows creating a backup of my user id, next error Windows can find local
profile - default one created
Now I just can't log on to my machine - I put in my password and windows
does not accept my user id or password - whick I know are correct. I tried
to use safe mode - but still can log on - not sure how to get on as
administrator - as I tried in safe mode but could not guess the password -
yes I tried admin
