Unable to install SUS client.

Russell

Hi,

I'm not able to intall the SUS client onto a windows 2000
machine which has service pack 4 already loaded.

error message: "Microsoft Windows Update Auto Update
requires Windows 2000 SP2 or Windows XP"

anybody else hit this problem ???

Cheers
Russell.

That is correct. If you have SP4, you already have the latest client
installed, so it will not let you install it.

Okay,

Still a bit confussed as it says to change the client to
point to the SUS server, but I can't see anywhere to
change the settings to point to my SUS server (from the
auto update in control pannel) I only the default 3
settings to go and get them from windowsupdate.com.

You can either do this through group policy or by changing the registry on
the client machine.

You can't do it through control panel.

Configuring as SUS Client
From the start menu go to run and enter "gpedit.msc"
This will open the group policy editor
From the Local Computer Policy
Computer Configuration
Right click Administrative Templates. Then left
click "Add/Remove Templates"
Then click the Add button
Select the wuau.adm template.
Next close the Add/Remove Templates windows.
Double click Windows Components folder
then, double click Windows update folder.
Double click "Configure Automatic Updates"
Select "Enabled"
Choose how you want automatic updating to work:
2 = Notify for download and install
3 = Auto download and notify for install
4 = Auto download and schedule to install
If you choose 4 then schedule the install time
Click the Next Policy button
"Specify intranet Microsoft update service location"

hello,
should these stteings not been done in the active directory group policy,
rather than on the local computer ?
if I understand it all correctly, the wuau.adm should be installed on the
AD-server, that has the GPO's
and that these settings would be transfered to the clients.
or am I mistaken ?
thnks
Fred

You can configure these settings on the client or on DC. I
have configure clients that are not members of or domain
using gpedit on the client and used the group policy
editor on the DC to configure the policy for an OU.
