unable to install hardware after update

After an online Windows Update (mostly security patches), my wireless adapter
(Netgear MA311) no longer works. It no longer appears in Device Manager, and
I'm not able to reinstall it.

The Add Hardware Wizard cannot detect the adapter, and even when I select
the new device type as a network adapter and point to the driver and INF file
on the installation floppy, the wizard does not accept it (the window to
select the network adapter from is empty).

I've tried System Restore, physically removed the card from its slot,
changed PCI slots, as well as uninstalling the utility software that came
with it, removed the driver from \windows\system32\drivers, and even did an
in-place repair reinstall of WinXP, but still I can't get the computer to
acknowledge that there is new hardware in place.

The adapter card works fine when I put it into another machine, so it's not
the card.

Thanks for any help or suggestions
