unable to Hibernate or go into Stand By

I hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete to go into Hibernate or Stand By and click the
appropriate menu items and... nothing happens. I can do it a dozen
times and still, nothing happens.

I'm about to reboot, right now, which will probably fix the problem,
for now, but what can I do if this happens, again, when I don't have
the time to properly save everything?

Is there a reason why going into Hibernate wouldn't work or a way to
trigger it via the command line?
