UNABLE TO DELETE DESKTOP SHORTCUT/FOLDER ICONS

West

Recently I sent my Dell Dimension 8400 for a major repair (new motherboard
and power supply) and in the meantime had it's hardisk transfered to another
XP based pc to continue with my daily works.

I got back the Dell today and re-install it's hard disk. System is running
ok but most of the shortcut icons on the desktop and folders are now blanks
i.e. without their contents or target. I've tried to delete these icons but
receive the following msg "Error Deleting File or Folder. Cannot delete <file
name> : Access is denied. Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected
and that the file is not currently in use"

Disk is not full and the file concern is not in use. Could anybody tell me
what cause this to happen and how to get rid of the 'blank' icons from my
desktop and file folders?

Thank you

Reinstalled the hd & with the OS to another motherboard, unless its the
exact board as the last youre troubles are just begining, hard to believe that
older pc boards are kept around for replacement after a year or two..Either
way,R.click on the desktop,properties,display,desktop,customize,web,locate
& run the desktop cleanup utility....If that fails, open user accounts, create
a new account for yourself, delete the old account.....

First off, reinstalling a new motherboard and Hard Drive is a provocation of
the warranty with DELL!

It mean you need the exact Motherboard and HDD to do that from another DELL
machine with same specs or from DELL outlet.

Come to your issue, this happen because changing the linker/pointer to these
folders/icons, when you started they look for the original path/applications
but they don't find it.

Try to boot up in Safe Mode and delete all these Icons then reboot into
Normal Mode.

I don't think Dell's warranty would be provoked into doing anything just
because of a MB and HDD installation. Who knows, West may have sent it TO
Dell to have the work done.

West,
When you log in, is it as admin? If nass's suggestion doesn't work, take
ownership of the icons, then delete them.

Changing an OEM system hardware for another brand will provoke the warranty
of that Manufacturer. In West Case, yes he may be send it to DELL but he/she
didn't mention that and we can't assume what happened. But, yes you could be
right.

R-reading west post again, realized he damage he/she done to the HDD.

In West case the icons (shortcuts) turned to be Generic icons, so repairing
the file association my help in West case.

nass,
I was just having a little fun at you. The words you should have been using
were "revoke" and "revocation". And yes, you are correct, replacing the MB
and HDD would cause a revocation of the warranty unless it was performed or
authorized by Dell.

Dear Andrew/Tom & Nass,

Pls be assured that the maintainance on the motherboard and powersupply was
done by DELL appointed service engineer and payment made to DELL. HDD has
been re-installed, and is working fine.

I hold PC Administrator previlages but is not able to delete the icons. Have
tried deleting the icons under safe mode but also to no avail.

As an alternative, I was advised to open another Administratior Ac, a new
Desktop and had to bear the anguish of manually + lengthy process of setting
the icons, Internet and MS settings one by one all over again.

I sure every one of us would rather stick to the previous Desktop.....
