unable to complete file copy during new install

i'm trying to install an OEM version of win XP into an 80GB WD HD on a new P4 2.8G system build, booting from a NEC 8x DVD RW burner. i've partitioned and done a full ntfs format but during the copying of setup files into the boot/system partition the process hangs with the message "cannot copy mydocs.dll, make sure win xp cd is in the drive". on retry the copying proceeds only to hang again on another *.dll file. another message comes up which states that "the file setup placed on your hard drive is not a valid windows xp system image. if you are installing from a cd, there may be a problem with the win xp cd". i have tried to repeat the install process a number of times but have only gone up to 84% of files copied before it hangs again. could this be due to a defective win xp cd or are there other likely causes for this problem

other hardware in this build are: intel 865perll MB, 1 GB corsair DDR 3200, gigabyte radeon 9600pro video card. no problems on initial boot. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Nollide,

Sounds like your media is bad.

Per KB Q326246

Replacement of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Software Media
To replace OEM software media, you must contact the OEM where you acquired
the hardware and software. If that OEM is no longer in business, you can
contact Microsoft Sales Information at (800) 426-9400 for more information
about alternatives for acquiring genuine software. To determine whether your
software is eligible for replacement, you can call the OEM System Builder
hotline at (800) 325-1233 Monday - Friday, 5:30 AM - 5:00 P.M. Pacific time
zone. To determine whether your software was installed on your computer when
you purchased it, visit the following Microsoft Web site:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?id=fh;en-us;oemdirectory

Hope this helps.

Hello Kevin

thank you very much for you response. I purchased both hardware and software from newegg.com. i did call this problem to their attention and they wanted someone from microsoft to verify that the media was indeed bad before they would replace it. i shall e-mail them a copy of your reply if you don't mind. again, thanks
