Unable to change size of Temporary Internet Files.

Swampy

Hi,

Recently I have noticed that I have been unable to
download files from the internet, inculding for example
Flash movies. My internet speed has also bee dire.

I looked into the problem, and found what I think could
be the cause.

My Temporary Internet Files folder is set to 0Mb in size,
and I am unable to change this!

If I try to increase the size of the folder I get the
following error:

"Please select a value between 1 and 0 for how much disk
space temporary internet files can use."

Whatever I have tried hasn't suceeded in fixing the
problem. The only information I can find on the subject
referes to practially all IE versions except IE 6, and
all on other operating systems than XP.

I have tried using SFC to see if anything was wrong, to
no avail, I've tried an "In Place Install" of Win Xp,
this didnt fix the problem either.

Has anyone else had this problem? With IE 6 on Win XP?
and if so is it fixable, other than flattening the
machine and starting from scratch?

I've been trying to fix this problem for near on 2 days
now so any help would be greatly appreciated!!

You may need to clear your TIF as you may have a corrupt file there.

Close all instances of OE and IE
Control Panel | Internet Options | General tab
Click the "Delete Files" button, when prompted place a check in:
"Delete all offline content", click OK
Click the "Clear History" button, click OK.
Click the Settings button, adjust the TIF size to 50 mb, click OK

Thanks for the help Mike,

Unfortunately none of the suggestions worked, I had
already tried the knowledgebase articles to no avail.

I've manage to work around the problem, by creating a new
almost identical user account, and importing stuff like
email etc. Not ideal, but at least I can now browse the
web and download stuff.

Swampy,
Did you "completely" delete the TIF folders, via Administrator account?

SYMPTOMS
The amount of disk space Internet Explorer uses for temporary Internet
files may be set to 0 (zero) percent, and you may be unable to specify
a different setting. In Internet Explorer 5, if you try to change the
settings, you may receive the following error message:
Enter a number between 0 and 1 to indicate size of disk space for...
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the History, Cookies, or Temporary Internet
Files folder is damaged, or if a damaged file exists in one of these
folders.

... and delete files and folders not needed. I then copied over the
default files and folders from the Default User folder in Documents and
Settings.

Problem solved!!.
