Unable to Burn CDs

I am running Windows XP Pro and recently I am having
trouble burning CDs. I have even tried burning a temp
image to the hard drive first; however, the burn process
stalls and causes my computer to lock up. I've tried
Nero and Sony to burn CDs, but each program is having the
same result. Please help!

If you can't burn cd-r's in any of these programs, then probably the
drive is defective. You didn't really give enough information about
your system to get a definite answer, though. If you'd like one, repost
and include your computer specs (processor speed, amount of RAM), make
model of the burner, exact error messages you get (if any), were you
*ever* able to burn cd's and if so, what changed.

That suggests then that there is trouble with the hardware of the drive.
Using a lens cleaner - cautiously - might fix it
