Unable To BOOT

Basically I get the following error message….

Missing or
C:\windows.000\system\vm32.vxd
C:\windows.000\ifshlp.sys
Wininit.exe missing/unable to load

To make it short…..

I have as my operating system… Windows XP Pro upgrade
(From full version of WINDOWS ME) FAT32.

I was recording a live vocal in Samplitude, when the Monitor Screen went
BLACK, I heard the music in the background, but could not see the picture, so
I pulled the plug and tried to restart it.

The video was breaking up when I went into the bios to see if everything was
normal there, and they were.

However I can’t get to operating system.

Hitting F8 gets me to the option to boot in Safe Mode, however after
selecting Safe Mode the next screen gives me the ERRORS above, and I can’t
get past it.

I do music only on that computer, I don’t have and MODEM/NIC installed.
All my software is legally bought.

Can someone, can anyone please help me and my situation?

Thank you very much.

First tell me that you have a good/recent backup of the files that you value
on your hard disk. If yes continue, if no please consider this as a first
step.

Second, have you tried booting with the Windows XP CDROM in recovery mode?

Thanks for posting a reply HackerAce.

If I could turn back the time I would have made a backup ïŒ

I was so careful with XP that I didn’t even update to service pack 2.

I did try to do the recovery console, but it is stuck at C:

Just to let you know I did boot with a WINDOWS ME startup disk, entered in
dos and did a Scandisk; in doing that it found and I fixed several misreading
there.

Of course that did not solve my problem.

Can you please guide me through the steps of Recovery?

Thanks.

Hi, Marcus.

That Windows.000 folder is the backup of your WinME files, just in case you
might want to revert from WinXP to WinME some day.
I was so careful with XP that I didn’t even update to service pack 2.

That's TOO careful! As soon as you recover from this problem, install WinXP
SP2. It won't protect you from THIS kind of problem, but it will protect
you from many of the worms and other malware that are looking all over the
Internet for unprotected computers - like yours.
Just to let you know I did boot with a WINDOWS ME startup disk, entered in
dos and did a Scandisk; in doing that it found and I fixed several
misreading
there.

Aha! That's what did it! Throw away that WinME disk - or at least hide it
so that you won't be tempted to use it! Get rid of the WinME mindset.
WinXP is not built on MS-DOS and MS-DOS does not understand WinXP. When it
tries to use WinME methods to fix WinXP, it fouls up things, because it
doesn't understand what it sees. And ScanDisk "fixes" things that may not
really be broken.

Boot from the WinXP CD-ROM, start the Recovery Console and run FixBoot.
This should repair the boot sector on C: and rewrite C:\boot.ini to point to
WinXP's boot folder, C:\Windows (without the .000).
I did try to do the recovery console, but it is stuck at C:

I don't understand what you mean by this. The Recovery Console screen looks
like MS-DOS, but it is not. For a listing of the commands available in the
RC, type Help and press Enter.

If you get lost, post back with further questions.

One thing you can do is to simply re-install Windows XP. If you do this you
will have to re-install all of your applications but your data (if not
corrupted by a bad HD) will be intact. Do NOT choose to format, repartition,
or otherwise modify the existing disk configuration during installation!

Another avenue would be to purchase a new HD and install XP there mounting
your existing HD as a D: drive. This would allow you to be extra sure that
nothing changes on your existing disk driver during XP installation. Of
course you would have to change drive jumpers to make this disk a slave and
the new one a master.

One thing you might want to be careful about is the reason that this
happened in the first place. Even if you do not connect this machine to the
network I would not rule out virus, trojan, various evil software. You have
to transfer data to this machine somehow correct? CD-ROM, floppy, USB drive
or whatever. Also, you might have a bad HD.

Those are Win 98/ME files, so it looks to me as if the Upgrade did not
properly upgrade and you are in fact trying to boot ME from the place
where XP is. What *might* work is to Set the BIOS to boot CD before
Hard Disk. Boot the XP CD and, instead of Setup, take the immediate R
for Repair. Assume any password requested is blank, and TAB over.

Use
Attrib -H -R -S C:\boot,ini
DEL C:\boot.ini
to delete the bad one
BootCfg /Rebuild

to search for Windows installations and make a new one
