unable to access windows update

hi
i am using win xp home edition sp1. just recently i have
not been able to access the windows update site. when i
attempt to access it, the browser displays this message:

"Thank you for your interest in Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that
helps you get the most out of your computer.

You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system
in order to use Windows Update."

i have installed many updates from the site before. this
just happened a few days ago. suggestions?
