unabe to install XP on athlon64

I don't know if this is a hardware or software problem, I hope someone can
help. I have an Athlon 64 3200+ chip on an Asus A8V motherboard, with an LG
dvd burner as the secondary ide, an 80g samsung hhd as the primary ide. I
have a new clipper pro 400w power supply.

The system starts up fine and boots from the xp disc, but when "install XP"
is selected it gives the usual blue screen, "Windows XP setup" with "please
wait" at the bottom. Then the drives power down, and nothing further
happens, no matter how long I wait.

I have tried A Windows 2000 install disc, it does the same thing.

I removed the HDD and checked it was ok on a second machine, blank and NTFS
formatted.

The bios recognises the HDD as the primary master.

I have no idea what to try next. Any ideas?
