I mistakenly saved a document I changed without renaming it and therfore,
lost the original. Is there any way for me to recover the original?

See the default path you set to save your Docs and you will find it there as
Doc.
Also you can still see it if you didn't clear your Recent Documents by
clicking File >> See the bottom list, is it there?.
HTH.

Realistically, only from your backup copy. Or buying a forensic data
recovery service.

Thanks your reply.

In the Recent File list, the 'new' documnet is there with the original name.

How and where do I find the default path?

Depends. Some software automatically saves the last (few?) renditions with a
".BAK" extension. Some software imbeds all the changes within the document
so that it can be rolled back to virtually any previous version.

--- slight digression

"Why doesn't this cow have horns?" asked the city-slicker.

"There are many reasons why a cow might not have horns," replied the farmer.
"The animal may not be mature enough to have horns. The cow may be a breed
that doesn't have horns at all. Or the cow may have been de-horned at
birth."

"The reason this particular cow doesn't have horns is because this cow is a
horse."

---- end digression

What software were you using when you failed to make a backup?

Hi jj,

The short answer is no, unless you have a backup of the original document.

When you saved the document with the changes rather than "Save As" -- or
tried to close it and were asked "Do you want to save the changes to
Document X?" and answered Yes -- the application did what you were
instructing it to do. It saved it WITH your changes.

Do you believe in miracles?

One possible hope: Search for a file whose name is the same as the original
and whose extension is .wbk. That *may* be the original if you haven't saved
too many times while working. Rename it something_else.doc.
